This two-storey music teaching space links on two sides to the existing college buildings and included the redevelopment and refurbishment of the current practice rooms, along with a brand new 2-storey block to house the music students. The central campus location of the hub meant that extra care and planning was needed so that the construction works created as little disruption as possible to the students already occupying the building. This was particularly important during the exam weeks. Combined with the limited access and sensitive location of the site it meant that detailed planning of all construction activities was essential. The use of the classrooms and studios for music meant that very high acoustic separation was required as well as sound deadening within the rooms themselves to ensure the most accurate sound reproduction. Lighting is made as natural as possible with the use of sun-pipes through the building and natural ventilation is used extensively.
